Creditable Witness

Bill Shumaker

A person may tell us that it is raining and we will not question his report. The same person will tell us that it is raining blessings from God, and we will immediately question his report. Perhaps the person is not of our faith group. We are not willing to take his testimony as valid because of our preconceived idea that the witness cannot be creditable in the area of reporting blessings from God. Yet he is creditable to report droplets of water from God. This is a very simplistic way to start us thinking about to whom will we listen and why.

I hope that as we look closer at ourselves, we will consider the creditable witnesses of God from the pages of the Bible. Now, I direct your attention to the Moon (Psa. 89:37). Why is it written that the Moon is a faithful witness and we accept its testimony? At night, the Moon reports to us that the Sun is still shining although we do not see it. Because of the testimony I tell you that the Sun is shining but it is midnight. Will you accept my statement or will you contradict it or try to modify it?

There are some very important testimonies of other witnesses from Bible times on serious issues of our spiritual well being that are reflected through men and women of Moon-like qualities we should consider whether they are pillars of our faith group or not. They should not be considered lunatics. We may not have the only scholar(s) in service to Christ's brothers and sisters.

Being students (disciples) requires us to listen and to weigh the testimony of each witness in the scales of God's word. The creditable witnesses will not be found lacking. Keep in mind that on some nights even the Moon may be in a cloud or just going through a phase.
